Why Bamboo?

In Japan, bamboo has long symbolized purification, renewal, and the natural cycle of life. It has been woven into daily living for centuries.
Its rapid growth and gentle impact on the environment are also reasons why bamboo continues to be cherished.
We wanted to share the power of bamboo in its simplest, most honest form.

What Is Bamboo Charcoal Water?

Bamboo charcoal water is a traditional Japanese practice that uses bamboo charcoal—made by firing Japanese bamboo at high temperatures—placed directly into water.

The countless tiny pores within the charcoal gently absorb unwanted odors and impurities, helping to create a smoother, cleaner taste.

Nothing extra is added.

It simply lets the natural power of the material do the work.

History

In Ichijuku, Kimitsu City, Chiba Japan Prefecture, there remains an earthen kiln tradition passed down orally since the Edo period. The person who introduced this earthen kiln to the region was Hanbei, who visited Kimitsu in 1764 (Hōreki 14).

Before that time, charcoal was primarily fired in stone kilns. During the Kamakura period, large amounts of charcoal were needed for sword making, and many stone kilns were built. However, stone kilns were heavy and difficult to construct. Hanbei is said to have developed a lighter, easier-to-build earthen kiln that could still withstand high temperatures, and passed this technique and knowledge on to the local community.

Our bamboo charcoal is still produced using this traditional earthen kiln. Locally harvested bamboo from Kimitsu is rested for six months, then fired at high temperatures of approximately 800–1000°C over the course of about one week.

This bamboo charcoal is born through time, patience, and careful attention to fire—removing all excess and leaving only what is essential.

It reflects the spirit of Japanese craftsmanship, which values substance and integrity over speed and efficiency.

Mineral Components in Bamboo Charcoal

Among various types of charcoal, bamboo charcoal is known for containing a rich variety of minerals. These include potassium, sodium, calcium, magnesium, iron, manganese, and silicon.

In particular, bamboo charcoal contains notably high levels of silicon (22.9%) and potassium (14.1%).

Silicon is considered an important mineral in the body and is associated with supporting connective structures such as collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid. Potassium plays a role in maintaining cellular balance and helps regulate sodium levels in the body.

These naturally occurring minerals are part of what makes bamboo charcoal unique.

How to Use Bamboo Charcoal

Before First Use
Rinse lightly with water, then boil for about 10 minutes before use.
This helps restore the bamboo charcoal to its pure, natural state and ensures it is ready for use.

How to Make Better-Tasting Water

Bamboo charcoal gently reduces odors and impurities in water, creating a smoother, cleaner taste that is easy to drink.
• Add 1 stick of bamboo charcoal to 500 ml–1 L of tap water
• Let it sit for about 3-5 hours
Usage guideline: Approximately 2 weeks with daily use.

Using this water for coffee or tea can help soften bitterness and enhance the natural aroma.

How to Cook Better Rice

When the water is purified, the natural sweetness of the rice becomes more noticeable.

• Place 1 stick of bamboo charcoal into the rinsed rice
• Add water as usual and cook normally
• Remove the charcoal after the rice is cooked

Enjoy a cleaner, more refined taste in every bowl.
